Cara Downes from the National Archives of Australia
'The Aftermath of WW1 - The Australian experience'
After four years, the Great War ended in November 1918. For Australians that fought in the war and survived, their battle had not ended. Australia was faced with the largest number of wounded and mentally damaged men in its history and was far from being equipped to assist them. The National Archives is the home of the Veteran’s repatriation files that reveal in many cases what their lives were like after the war. The seminar will show you how to locate and use repatriation and service records and also look at the role women played after the war was over. 'War Brides in Australia'
WWII saw for the first time, the mass migration of Australian women to the USA as war brides or fiancées. Australia’s involvement in various wars there were many romances between servicemen and women from countries where they were serving and often this lead to marriage. Many of the women they married migrated to Australia and this happened for both WWI and WWII. We will look at their stories through photographs, service records and shipping lists found in the collection of the National Archives of Australia. |
