A number of Special Interest Groups are held regularly where like minded members have the opportunity to meet and develop a more in depth approach to their research in a specific area.
The format varies with each group. Members are encouraged to participate in the sharing of experiences with research, information and ideas. If you are a GCFHS member and would like to attend a Special Interest Group, please check the calendar and just turn up. All groups cost $2.00 which includes a cuppa and a biscuit. Computer Group (GCFHS Members only)
Primarily a self help group of people who use computers in their research- from beginners to experienced users. The meeting usually starts with a presentation, with opportunity for discussion and Q & A. All facets of computer use are covered during the year. Check out the programme. We start promptly at 7pm on the 3rd Wednesday evening of the month from February to November, and are a friendly bunch. Scottish Group (GCFHS Members Only)
If your ancestors came from Scotland and you are seeking information about finding them or details about them, you may wish to attend this group and seek help from the convenors. They can assist you with further research and direct you to the various holdings in our library relating to Scotland as well as advice on relevant internet sites. Bring along any relevant research you have. The group meets quarterly on a Sunday afternoon. Legacy Family Tree User Group (GCFHS Members Only)
Our Legacy software self-help group is held every two months on the first Sunday of the month. This group meets from 1pm to 3.30pm Legacy is a software program which can be used as a tool with which to record all you family history research. Sue will be on hand to answer your questions and update you with the latest Legacy features. Irish Research (GCFHS Members Only)
If you have ancestors who arrived from Ireland, you will know of the research difficulties that Irish researchers may be faced with. This group is no longer running, but GCFHS members may contact the former convenor for assistance. |

A Guide to Family History Research
Introductory Research Class This class is suitable for both beginner and intermediate researchers, and you will leave inspired and motivated to continue your family history quest. Learn how to compile a family tree. How to set out your information. Discover just how many ways you can track down your family. Find out which resources are freely available to help you in your search. How to determine which branch of the tree is yours. Our classes will inform you of the amazing amount of information that is readily available. Advanced Research Class Even if you have been researching for a time, you may be surprised at what new records are available. These classes are suitable for advanced researchers and include pre-1837 registration in England, tax records, the parish chest, quarter sessions, using Phillimore's Atlas, parish registers, and more. Not suitable for beginners. Starts at 9am and runs for about 2 hours Cost: Members free Cost: Non Members $10 (is refundable if joining on the day ) |
