Irish Immigration - Why they left Ireland & Where they Went
with Helen Connor

Find out why people left Ireland, particularly before the Famine. Where did they go, and why? What did they expect to find when they arrived in their new country? Explore immigration records and find what they contain to help you with your family history. This presentation will include live searching of databases to showcase how participants can search the troublesome Irish records.

'Researching Scottish Records on the Internet'
with Ailsa Corlett

Pre 1975 Scotland consisted of 33 counties. Each county has so much genealogical material if you know where to find it and who to contact. The county websites contain more records than those on Ancestry, FindmyPast or even FamilySearch.  By belonging to a county Family History Centre even for just a year you can ask for searches, obtain newsletters and contact others researching your family names in the same area. They are very willing to help with your research – at a small cost to join. Information obtained from some of the sites include photographs of headstones; photos of the churches and places; indexes relating to cemeteries; BDM’s, Probates; Workhouses; Farm records; publications that the societies have produced. A full handout covering all the sites talked about will be available.

Dunedin, New Zealand born, with Scottish DNA of 65% and my Mother of 97%.
With Maternal Grandparents only going to New Zealand from Glasgow in 1926 I was bought up in many of the Scottish traditions and customs and used to love listening to the stories my grandparents told of the “old home”.

Have been compiling our family history since 1989, and always belonged to many societies. Was accredited via AAGRA as specialist in New Zealand records in the 1990’s. Always had a love of tech things, and over the years been very involved in GSQ’s computer group; Scottish Group; TAG; Education committee; and currently a Web Coordinator for the Society. Often do presentations on Scotland or New Zealand when required and manage our Monday and Wednesday Zoom sessions.
