House Histories and Cemetery Stories

This session will explore the value of historical land records in Queensland, where to acquire them and how they can be used to find new research paths to follow in public libraries and family history organisations.

It will also provide an overview of the story of cemeteries in our local area, highlighting the sometimes surprising places where cemetery records can be found and the challenges facing researchers.

While the talk uses Gold Coast examples, the focus of the session is on problem solving and finding creative ways to link people and places irrespective of whether research is local or much further afield.

'Death and Burial Practices 1840s to 1950s'
The seminar covered how Australia's funerary and burial practices were influenced by the customs of the countries of origin, looking closely at the UK and Ireland. The reign of Queen Victoria deeply influenced how people responded to death here in Australia. It was during the Edwardian Era we saw changes brought about by WWI.
The talk focused mainly on Queensland and the South East, and in general the Commonwealth.
  • Buried Close to Home – examining burial places prior to the establishment of gazetted cemeteries in the 1870s
  • How burial practices were adapted to the tropics – and the types of documents generated locally by a death
