Family Tree Maker Special Interest Group: Newcomers are always welcome to attend this group of members who meet the first Friday of every month to discuss all the ways we can make the best use of this user-friendly software. We work on a round table question and answer format which benefits all those who attend. Laptops are welcome or bring note pad and pencil to jot down the answers to your questions. The next meeting will be held on Friday 5th September 2008 at 9.30am in our rooms for the usual fee of $1. Stay and share a cuppa and a chat after the talk. Computer Group: This month we investigated all the ways we can get the most from www.ancestry.com.au Fay Carbis did a wonderful job and we were all eager to get home and give it a go. The next evening meeting will be held on 17th September 2008 at 7pm sharp and the cost will be the usual $1. This meting will be devoted to ‘brickwalls’ so bring along your ‘brickwall’ and between us we will do a bit of communal brainstorming to try to help you find that hidden ancestor. I believe that my grandmother was ‘beamed down’; certainly not born! No booking is necessary. Contact Ann Metcher for further information on 5530 6648.
Annual General Meeting: This year’s’ Annual General Meeting was very well attended, which was lovely to see. We had the pleasure of having one of our Patrons, Cr Dawn Crichlow, present to our outgoing President, Dawn Hutchinson, Honorary Life Membership to our society. Dawn volunteers as a room assistant and has been a committee member since 1999, having joined the society in 1995. Three other members were presented with Certificates of Appreciation for the tireless volunteer work they do behind the scenes. They were Sandra Green, Lynne Pateman and Bill Reid. Michelle Geoghegan, the daughter of one of our departed long standing members, Beverley Fisher, presented the Beverley Fisher Award which is given to the writer of an article judged to be the best written for our journal in the past year. I was very thrilled to win that award. We welcome a new member to the management committee. Jim Adams volunteered on the day to take up the one position not filled. Our new President, Ann Morse, wished him a happy and rewarding time working with the committee. Finally the raffle was drawn. The three winning tickets were bought by: 1st Prize: Norman Ralfe 2nd Prize: Tricia Mackenzie 3rd Prize: Gwen Sheriff Two of the above prize winners were present on the day making it all the more special.
Parking: We have been advised that the area marked ‘2hr limit’ in front of the upstairs entry area will not be enforced but we have been notified that a member has been fined for parking on the grass beside the entrance road adjacent to our downstairs rooms. Do be aware that you must only park in marked parking spaces.
Foreign coins: It seems that some members are paying with foreign coins so our Treasurer, May Shackleton, has asked for your assistance. These coins are not legal tender in this country and the bank is vigilantly checking our banking monies and rejecting these coins. It places May in a very difficult position where she has to replace the coins with those of her own or alter her banking figures. Please ensure that you pay on entry or for any copying or your tea or coffee with only Australian currency.
Queensland State Archives: There is a bundle of flyers advertising the events and times of happenings at the Queensland State Archives. Do take one when you visit the rooms to see if there is something that may interest you or your family.
